Midlothian, Texas
Wanda Marie DeWeerd, lovingly known to her family as Marie or Mammaw, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, in Midlothian, Texas, at the age of 88. Born on July 25, 1938, in Le Flore, Oklahoma, to Richard and Zelma Evans, Marie carried her Oklahoma roots with her throughout her life. She was always quick to remind her grandchildren that they got their sweetness from her and their “Okie blood.”
Marie was the heart of her family. Her home was known simply as “Mammaw’s house,” a name that was rightfully earned because everyone knew who was in charge. Her house was a place where family gathered, where there was always something cooking in the kitchen, and a jar of cookies on the counter.
Marie and her husband, Arnold, known as Pappaw, were two peas in a pod. Marie and Arnold met one night while Marie was babysitting for some friends. Arnold returned with their friends after a night out. When the topic of taking Marie home came up, Arnold’s hand popped up. The rest is history.
During their 64 years of marriage, they shared a love that was unmistakable. Together, her and Arnold built their business, WM Sales. After retirement, they moved to “The Farm”, where they both lived out their days.
There is comfort in knowing that the two of them are reunited in heaven, where we can only imagine Mammaw had to make sure she beat Dolly Parton there.
When Marie and Arnold relocated to Dallas, Marie took a part-time job at the local stamp store to make some extra money. She often told the story that the ladies she worked with knew when school was out because all 4 of her kids would be peering into the window at the same time.
Marie could most often be found in her kitchen, cooking or baking something for the people she loved. She was known for her incredible cookies.
To her grandchildren, Mammaw was more than a grandmother—she was a caregiver, a comfort, and a second home. Mammaw’s couch was always the perfect place for a sick day and there was never a shortage of cold drinks in the fridge. No one left Mammaw’s house without a big hug and a $20 bill for ice cream.
The holidays were among Marie’s favorite times of year. She loved having her children and grandchildren gathered around the table for a big meal. On New Year’s Day, Marie would make ollie balls and happily share them with anyone who walked through her front door.
Marie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Arnold DeWeerd, and her siblings, Kenneth Evans and Velda Evans.
She is survived by her four children, Arnold Jr. (Andrea), David (Elissa), Pam (Ronnie), and Dennis (Kari); her ten grandchildren, David Jr., Jennifer (Jonathan), Mandie (Louis), Dustin (Liliana), Emily, Jeffrey, Christi (Brett), Paul (Ally), Kalli (Kyle), and Daniel (Haley); and her great-grandchildren, Cadence, Travis, Parker, Spencer, Corbyn, Diego, Andres, Jack, Ella, Ember, Kasen, Kole, and Charlie.
Mammaw's greatest legacy is the family she loved so completely. There is comfort in knowing that the love she gave so freely will live on in every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild. Mammaw's house may have been a place, but Mammaw was what made it home.
